 OVERVIEW OF THE MUNICIPALITY

 

Suri is the District headquarters of Birbhum district and it lies adjacent to the state of Jharkhand. Birbhum district lies between 23°32’30”N and 24°35’00”N latitude and 88°01’40”E and 87°05’25” longitudes and the Suri lies on 24° N latitude and 87°30’40” E longitude. Adjacent districts of the municipal town are Burdwan, Murshidabad and south-eastern part of Nadia. It is 133 km far from district head quarter of Burdwan and 100 km. from district headquarter of Murshidabad.

 

At present the area of this town is 9.49. sq. km. and Municipal area is divided into 18 municipal wards for administrative purposes. Town has been bifurcated by the connecting loop line of Burdwan. Sahebgang Loop and Kolkata-Delhi main line under Eastern Railway. Suri at about 245 km. from state capital ‘Kolkata’ is situated on the important National Highway connecting another two N.H both N.H-2 (Kolkata-Delhi Road) and N.H-31 (Delhi-Assam Road) on the Eastern Railway (Calcutta-Assam main line). It is culturally developed and acts as nuclei of pilgrimage of this Birbhum district. The nearest important places are Burdwan (133 km), Durgapur (100 km), a famous industrial belt in India, Asansol (175 km), a coal mines (Eastern-Coalfield) area, Murshidabad, a famous place for battle between Nabab Sirajodaulla and British Soldiers, Dumka, the headquarter of Dumka district of Jharkhand State and Bolpur-Shantiniketan enriched with Visvabharati University created by Kabiguru R.N.Tagore.

 

Geology/Geomorphology

The lands of this Subdivision to the west are located on the hard impervious crystalline rocks, while the rest is made up of Gondwana sediments, the tertiary, the laterites and alluvium.

 

Topography  and  Soil:

The soil is rich with deposition of alluvium of the Mayurakshi and Ajay. It is partly laterite clay and partly red colour coarse-grained sand. Soil erosion is quite predominant. The high lands to the west are located on the hard impervious crystalline rocks, while the rest is made up of gondowana sediments.
